Certified Irish Angus along with its partners, ABP and Kepak host Ireland’s most successful Agricultural Science schools competition which is now in its seventh year. A total of 2,300 pupils have applied throughout the competition, and in that time, 136 pupils from 31 schools all around the country have become finalists. This year more than ever, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved as the majority of the competition takes place outdoors in small school groups, where social distancing can be easily abided by within the school premises, at home and on-farm. Key benefits for students
Each year, applicants are judged by industry experts who select five finalist groups that will have the chance to rear five Angus calves for 18 months while carrying out a research project on a related theme of their choice. Not only will the finalist groups benefit financially from the sale of their Angus animals, they will also develop strong communication skills and increase their confidence in presenting to a public audience. The competition which will take place over a two-year period presents an exciting timeline of events. Throughout the course of the competition, should Government restrictions allow, finalists will attend study trips to learn about the marketing of Irish beef. School groups that have taken part previously have benefitted hugely from the media exposure obtained from their involvement in the competition. Past finalists have featured on programmes such as RTÉ’s Ear to the Ground, Nationwide, Six One News and The Late Late Show with their calves. Finalist groups have also had numerous features and interviews with regional and national press. I would urge you to encourage your students and your teacher responsible for Ag Science to take a close look at putting forward a group to participate in this superb competition. For an insight into the essence of the competition, please take a look at the video enclosed and visit www.certifiesirishangus.ie/certified-irish-angus-schools-competition/ for information on how to apply. The closing date for entries is 20th November 2020. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
