The Bar of Ireland's "Look into Law" Transition Year Programme is an exciting initiative aimed at increasing students' awareness of the work of The Bar of Ireland and to encourage students to consider a career as a barrister. This annual "Access all areas" programme aims to encourage schools and students from a wide cross-section of society to apply to take part. The programme is aimed in particular at those who would otherwise have no access to the Bar. To help achieve this, 20% of places are reserved for DEIS schools. 100 places are available with a minimum of 20% given to DEIS schools and the remaining places allocated by a random lottery draw performed by The Bar of Ireland. All schools will be notified shortly after if they have been successful or not. Students can come from Transition Year up to 6th year. Students will be based in The Bar of Ireland, Church Street, Dublin 7 with daily visits offsite which will include the Four Courts, the Criminal Courts of Justice and King's Inns. Programme Contents In the mornings, participating students will be assigned to groups where they will shadow a designated barrister. They will be introduced to the many different facets of a barrister's working life and will have the opportunity to experience the reality of life as a barrister. During the afternoons, the students will participate in a range of different activities and students are expected to attend all organised activities:
Upon completion of the programme, each student is presented with a certificate to mark their participation. You can view the official page here: Hi,
We hope you are keeping safe and well, settling in as comfortably as you can with back-to-school well and truly here. Below you will find info on our offering this year to TY students. OPEN MIND Studio is a week-long programme allowing participants to learn, play and explore through workshops, talks and activities which highlight the rich network of interconnections between science, technology and the arts. These provide an opportunity to develop key competences for lifelong learning, such as problem solving, collaboration and communication. While we normally hold OPEN MIND Studio in our exhibition space, this term we have moved our offering online to ensure everyone’s safety. We’re running two editions: 23-26 November and 30 November to 3 December and each week will be limited to 30 participants. We'll meet on Zoom from 10am - 12pm and 1pm - 3pm over the four days. The workshops are led by the Science Gallery team, and will feature lots of breakout rooms and small group activities. Science Gallery will liaise with participants before the programme to ensure access to an internet enabled device is not a barrier to their participation and we will make arrangements to loan equipment where possible. This year's OPEN MIND Studio is entitled ARTificial Intelligence Lab. Participants will explore the impact of complex technology on modern life, as well as delving into the ethics and advances happening in artificial intelligence, and the role of bias and culture. Applications for a place on the 2020/2021 programme are now open! We would love it if you could circulate this to your community and we hope to see some of your students there! For students to get a taster of what OPEN MIND Studios has in store, they are welcome to join our online workshop on Tuesday 22 September at 6pm. Sign up here! The closing date for applications for Term 1 online programme is 29.09.2020 Our programme is open to all and our aim is to create an accessible, comfortable and inclusive space for people to dream, to feel and to critique. ———————————————————--

Certified Irish Angus along with its partners, ABP and Kepak host Ireland’s most successful Agricultural Science schools competition which is now in its seventh year. A total of 2,300 pupils have applied throughout the competition, and in that time, 136 pupils from 31 schools all around the country have become finalists. This year more than ever, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved as the majority of the competition takes place outdoors in small school groups, where social distancing can be easily abided by within the school premises, at home and on-farm. Key benefits for students
Each year, applicants are judged by industry experts who select five finalist groups that will have the chance to rear five Angus calves for 18 months while carrying out a research project on a related theme of their choice. Not only will the finalist groups benefit financially from the sale of their Angus animals, they will also develop strong communication skills and increase their confidence in presenting to a public audience. The competition which will take place over a two-year period presents an exciting timeline of events. Throughout the course of the competition, should Government restrictions allow, finalists will attend study trips to learn about the marketing of Irish beef. School groups that have taken part previously have benefitted hugely from the media exposure obtained from their involvement in the competition. Past finalists have featured on programmes such as RTÉ’s Ear to the Ground, Nationwide, Six One News and The Late Late Show with their calves. Finalist groups have also had numerous features and interviews with regional and national press. I would urge you to encourage your students and your teacher responsible for Ag Science to take a close look at putting forward a group to participate in this superb competition. For an insight into the essence of the competition, please take a look at the video enclosed and visit www.certifiesirishangus.ie/certified-irish-angus-schools-competition/ for information on how to apply. The closing date for entries is 20th November 2020. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
